The Name

Ithaka is the home island of Odysseus in the famous epic, The Odyssey.  After 10 years of fighting at Troy, Odysseus finds himself adrift at sea and lost for another 10 years before finally arriving home to his faithful wife Penelope on their home of Ithaka.  Odysseus’ story is our story.  It is a redemptive story of family, loss, struggle, hope, and ultimately one of longing for the riches of Home and all it entails.  Family, friends, good food, rest, work, and play among places and people we know.  Homer captures this well when Odysseus says, “Nevertheless I long, I pine, all my days, to travel home and see the dawn of my return.”  

This longing for Home, for Ithaka is in all of us.  A place of comfort, peace, love, and joy among people we know and love.  Whether you are in a dorm room, your forever home, rental, or at work, we long for these sort of things wherever we are at.
